Don’t Visit St Lucia Only For Beaches


St Lucia always remains in the top priorities of people looking to enjoy their vacation in typical Caribbean style. Like other Caribbean destinations, there are several beaches that lure large number of people to plan holidays to St Lucia. However, list of attractions in the island country is not only limited to beaches and marine activities. Rich history and intriguing culture are other highlights of the island country. There are several attractions in the capital city of Castries.

One of the most important attractions in the city is Derek Walcott Square. This square is the most important site in the city. It is named after famous resident of Castries who won Nobel Prize in 1992 for his excellence in literature. Some of the most popular architectural structures are located at this square. Therefore, every year large number of architecture lovers plan St Lucia holidays to take a look at the magnificent old architecture. Most important structure is the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. As you step into the cathedral, you would come across spectacular golden light, candles and flowers.

The cathedral also features gigantic Samaan Tree. According to experts, this tree is around 400 years around. In the southern side of the cathedral, you would come across beautiful French buildings built during 19th and 20th centuries. These structures feature elegant woodwork and old fretwork balconies. Holidays in St Lucia are incomplete without feverish Castries central market. This market is just a few steps away from the square. From this market, you can buy Indian spices, variety of local fruits and number of souvenirs.

Another worth mentioning attraction in St Lucia is Morne Fortune. This majestic cascade is located in the outskirts of the city. It is also known as “Hill of Good Luck.” This hill has seen several battles between French and British which make it an incredible historical attraction as well. History lovers enjoying cheap holidays in St Lucia never miss out on visiting this site. There is a lookout point on the top of the hill from where you can admire panoramic view of the surroundings.

The hill also features Government House with magnificent palatial Victorian architectural style. It is the official residence of St. Lucia’s Governor General. You can explore military cemetery, powder museum and an old battery. If you are interested in exploring folklore of the island country, make sure Folk Research Center is there on the list of cheap St Lucia holidays. It is housed in old manor house owned by Deveaux family.

This small museum has comprehensive collection. It was established to preserve the culture and language of St Lucian Creole. While walking around the museum, you would come across indigenous musical instruments and reproduction of traditional ti-kay. You must spend time in research library that contains extensive collection of papers, books and photographs. Gros Islet is another worth mentioning attraction in the country. This small fishing town is located in the northern outskirts of Castries. Consider spending your Friday nights in this fishing village to be part of spectacular cultural fiesta.
